Detox: The lie that persists
Every now and then a new detox drink or program appears, but is the truth different?

Every now and then, a new detox drink or program comes along that promises a "clean" body and more energy. But is the truth simpler—and more scientific?
You’ve probably seen ads that promise to “cleanse your liver in 7 days” or “flush out toxins with a bottle.” These promises sound tempting—especially after a period of inactivity. But are they worth believing?
What your body is really doing
The human body has extremely efficient detoxification mechanisms through the liver, kidneys, lungs, and skin. According to a systematic review (Klein & Kiat, J Hum Nutr Diet , 2015), there is no strong scientific evidence that commercial detox programs “cleanse” the body.
What do the studies say?
There is no clinical data that detox drinks or "cleansing programs" improve health biomarkers.
On the contrary, they may pose risks, such as loss of muscle mass, electrolyte imbalances, or extreme calorie restriction.
The World Health Organization (WHO, 2023) emphasizes that liver and kidney health is mainly supported by a balanced diet, adequate hydration, avoidance of excessive alcohol and physical activity.
The psychological dimension
But why does detox still sell?
Illusion of control : people feel like they are "taking back control" after a period of binge eating.
Placebo effect : when you believe that something "cleanses" you, you may feel better even if there is no biological effect.
Instant gratification : we prefer the quick solution, rather than the slow consequence.
Health psychology studies show that such practices temporarily enhance feelings of relief but often lead to cycles of guilt and new excesses (Resnicow & Vaughan, Health Psychol , 2006).
Myth vs Truth
Myth: You need a detox drink to cleanse your body.
Truth: Your body already has sophisticated detoxification mechanisms. What it needs is support with proper nutrition, water, sleep, and exercise.
Conclusion / Food for thought
There is no bottle that will make you healthy. But there is the power of your daily consistency. The "real detox" is getting enough sleep, moving, eating a variety of foods, and giving your body the time it needs.
